Annual profection

Annual profection is a Hellenistic timing technique in which the Ascendant advances one sign per year: the house it reaches marks the topic of that year, and the planet ruling that house becomes the lord of the year.

It is the oldest and simplest timing technique in the tradition, and one of the few that came through twenty centuries intact: it appears in Vettius Valens and in Ptolemy, survived in Arabic and Latin medieval astrology, and returned to circulation with the recovery of the Hellenistic sources in recent decades.

Its logic is that the natal chart does not stay still. Every year the starting point shifts one place, and the focus of life shifts with it.

What it reveals

Which area of life moves to the center over the next twelve months. A year profected to house 7 is about relationships and partnerships; one to house 10, about work and public exposure.

And something more useful still: the lord of the year, the planet that governs that house. During that period it becomes the most important body in your chart—the transits that touch it are activated and the rest pass by.

That is where the real value of the technique lies: in any given year there are hundreds of transits. Profection tells you which ones to watch.

What it is not

It is not a prediction of events. It is a focus: it says where to look, not what will happen. The tradition uses it as a filter, not as an oracle.

Nor is it the same as the solar return, even though both change at the birthday. The return casts a new chart; profection moves the starting point over your usual natal chart. They are used together and they complement each other.

There are also monthly and daily profections, which apply the same idea on smaller scales.

Frequently asked questions

What is annual profection?

It is a Hellenistic timing technique in which the Ascendant advances one sign for each year of life. The house it reaches marks the topic of the year, and the planet ruling that house becomes the lord of the year.

What is the lord of the year?

It is the planet that rules the profected house. For that year it becomes the most important body in the chart: the transits that touch it are activated, and its condition in the natal chart indicates how much support or friction the period comes with.

When does the profection change?

At the astrological birthday, when the Sun returns exactly to the degree it occupied at birth. It coincides with the moment of the solar return, and usually falls on the birthday or the day before.

Does profection predict concrete events?

No. It indicates which area of life comes into focus and which planet administers it. Its usefulness is as a filter for knowing which transits to watch among the hundreds in a year.
