Essential dignities
The essential dignities are the system with which the tradition measures how well placed a planet is according to the sign and degree it occupies: whether it plays at home, as a guest, or on hostile ground.
It is the technical heart of traditional astrology and what most distinguishes it from the modern kind. Twentieth-century astrology kept almost only the aspects; the traditional kind judges the condition of the planet first and only then who it relates to.
The image the ancients used was domestic: a planet can be in its own house, an honored guest, passing through, or in the house of its enemy.
The five dignities
There are five levels, from greater to lesser strength. The domicile is the planet's own house; the exaltation, the sign where it is received with honors. Those two are the major ones, and they are the ones that appear in the cards for each sign and each planet on this site.
Then come three minor dignities: the triplicity, which distributes the signs by element and changes with sect; the bounds or terms, which divide each sign into five unequal stretches; and the decan or face, which divides it into three parts of ten degrees. They are systems of distribution by degree, inherited from Egyptian and Babylonian astrology.
A planet with no dignity at all is called peregrine: not badly off, just unsupported.
The debilities—and a frequent confusion
On the other side are exile—also called detriment—(the sign opposite the domicile) and fall (the one opposite the exaltation). A planet there works against the grain.
And here is the confusion that comes up most: only exile and fall are afflictions. Triplicity, bounds, and decan are dignities, minor though they are. Reading “it is in its decan” as something negative produces nonsense of the kind “the Sun is in its decan, the most afflicted thing in your chart”.
From the weighted sum of all the dignities comes the almuten: the planet with the most authority over a point of the chart.
