When two planets help each other

Mutual reception

Mutual reception is the condition in which two planets each occupy a sign the other governs: they host one another and lend each other strength even without forming an aspect.

The image the ancients used is literal: each one is in the other's house, and as a host you look after your guest. Two planets in reception take care of each other.

It is one of the most useful conditions in traditional astrology, and another of the ones modern astrology let drop almost entirely.

What it reveals

That two planets collaborate, even when their relationship by aspect is bad or nonexistent. A reception can rescue a difficult square or give an outlet to a badly placed planet.

It also indicates a channel between two areas of life: if the planets involved rule different houses, those two terrains communicate and lend each other resources.

A planet in exile or fall that is in reception with the one hosting it stops being stranded—it is still uncomfortable, but it has someone to turn to.

Mutual, simple, and by minor dignity

Mutual reception proper is reciprocal: each one is in the other's sign. Simple reception goes one way only—one receives the other without the favor being returned.

And it is not only domicile that counts: there can be reception by exaltation and, in medieval doctrine, also by triplicity, bounds, or decan. The lesser the dignity, the weaker the reception.

Frequently asked questions

What is a mutual reception in astrology?

It is when two planets each occupy a sign governed by the other. They host one another, which the tradition reads as collaboration: they lend each other strength even without forming any aspect between them.

Does mutual reception need an aspect?

No. That is precisely its peculiarity: two planets can hold each other up by reception without seeing each other by aspect. If there is an aspect as well, the condition is reinforced.

What is the difference between mutual and simple reception?

The mutual one is reciprocal: each planet is in the other's sign. The simple one goes in a single direction: one planet hosts the other without the favor being returned, and it is a weaker condition.
