Sign 11 · Air fixed

♒︎Aquarius

Aquarius is the eleventh sign of the zodiac, of air and fixed modality, ruled by Saturn: the air that orders the collective and gives structure to the idea.

Aquarius is full winter: the heart of the harshest season, when what sustains is not warmth but organization. Hence its subject—the group, the law, what is agreed among many.

It is fixed air: the idea that holds and becomes structure. It does not circulate like Gemini nor negotiate like Libra: it fixes a principle and does not move it.

What Aquarius means in the chart

Where Aquarius falls is the area where you think in terms of the whole: the community, the system, the rule that holds for everyone. There you are able to hold a position against the current.

A planet in Aquarius acts with distance and with general criteria. Saturn in Aquarius is in its diurnal domicile. The Sun in Aquarius is in exile—individual identity is subordinated to the collective, since this is the sign opposite Leo.

The limit is coldness: the principle can weigh more than the concrete person in front of you.

Saturn, not Uranus

Saturn rules Aquarius in its diurnal domicile. Uranus was assigned to it from the eighteenth century onwards, and it takes no part in the system of dignities, which works with the seven traditional planets. In a Hellenistic reading, the ruler of Aquarius is always Saturn.

That changes the interpretation considerably: the saturnine Aquarius is not the one of rebellion and rupture, but the one of collective order, law, and the long view over the whole.

Its opposite is Leo, the domicile of the Sun. The Leo–Aquarius axis is the one of the individual and the collective.

The body and the season

It corresponds to the ankles and circulation. The part of the body that carries weight in motion, and the system that distributes to the whole.

It is a diurnal sign, aligned with the planets of the day.

Frequently asked questions

Is Aquarius ruled by Saturn or by Uranus?

In the Hellenistic tradition it is ruled by Saturn, in its diurnal domicile. Uranus was assigned to it after its discovery in 1781 and takes no part in the system of dignities, which works only with the seven traditional planets.

Why is the Sun in exile in Aquarius?

Because Aquarius is the sign opposite Leo, the domicile of the Sun. The tradition reads it as individual identity subordinating itself to the logic of the collective.

Is Aquarius a water sign?

No: it is air, despite the name and the symbol of the water bearer. The water bearer pours water, but the sign belongs to the element of air along with Gemini and Libra.
