Sign 8 · Water fixed

♏︎Scorpio

Scorpio is the eighth sign of the zodiac, of water and fixed modality, ruled by Mars: the water that penetrates, does not let go, and transforms.

Scorpio is full autumn: the moment when what was harvested decomposes and returns to the earth. Its subject is not death out of morbidity—it is the cycle of what comes apart in order to be born again.

It is fixed water: sustained, concentrated emotion that does not scatter. The fixed signs do not let go, and in water that means depth and also stubbornness.

What Scorpio means in the chart

Where Scorpio falls is the area where you go all the way down and where there is no middle ground. It is the terrain of intense desire, of fertile crisis, and of what stays hidden.

A planet in Scorpio acts with concentration and without superficiality. Mars in Scorpio is in its nocturnal domicile: the edge with strategy, very different from the frontal attack of Aries. The Moon in Scorpio is in fall—feeling turns dense and hard to settle. Venus in Scorpio is in exile.

The limit is the inability to let things go: Scorpio does not forget and sometimes does not forgive either.

Mars, and the fall of the Moon

Mars rules Scorpio in its nocturnal domicile. It is the Mars of water: not the one that charges but the one that waits, calculates, and strikes once. A good part of Scorpio's reputation comes from there.

The Moon falls in Scorpio, because it is the sign opposite Taurus, where it is exalted. It is one of the most cited falls: the luminary of nourishment and calm, in the sign of crisis and depth.

Its opposite is Taurus. The Taurus–Scorpio axis is the one of resources: what is one's own and what is shared, what is kept and what is transformed.

The body and the season

It corresponds to the genitals and the organs of elimination: what engenders and what discards. Generation and death in the same part of the body, as in the same sign.

It is a nocturnal sign, aligned with the planets of the night.

Frequently asked questions

Is Scorpio ruled by Mars or by Pluto?

In the Hellenistic tradition it is ruled by Mars, in its nocturnal domicile. Pluto was assigned to it only in the twentieth century and takes no part in the system of dignities, which works only with the seven traditional planets.

Why is the Moon in fall in Scorpio?

Because Scorpio is opposite Taurus, the Moon's sign of exaltation. The fall is always the sign opposite the exaltation: the luminary of calm and nourishment, in the sign of crisis.

What is the difference between Aries and Scorpio if Mars rules them both?

The element and the modality. Aries is cardinal fire: the frontal Mars, which charges from the outset. Scorpio is fixed water: the strategic Mars, which waits, calculates, and does not let go.
