House 8 is the sector of death, shared resources, and crises: what a person passes through without controlling it, and what is received from another.
House 8 is, together with the twelfth, the most feared place in the chart—and the most misread. Its subject is not horror: it is what is not under your control.
It is a succedent house and it does not aspect the Ascendant: from the eighth, house 1 cannot be seen. That geometric blindness is the technical reason for its difficult reputation, the same one affecting houses 6 and 12.
What house 8 describes
Its oldest and most literal domain is death: one's own and that of those nearby. Hellenistic astrology studied it with a frankness that is uncomfortable today, and a considerable part of its technique was devoted to the subject.
The second domain is what is shared and what is inherited: inheritances, debts, another person's money, the assets held jointly in a marriage. It is the reverse of house 2—there what is mine, here what is ours and what belongs to another.
The third, more modern but coherent, is crises and transformations: the processes that pass through you and leave you someone else. What you do not choose but that changes you.
The 2–8 axis
House 2 and house 8 are the axis of resources. The second is what you produce and manage; the eighth is what you receive, owe, or share.
That is why house 8 is always read alongside house 2: a substantial inheritance is an eighth-house matter landing in the second, and a debt is the reverse.
How it is interpreted
The sign on the cusp, the ruler and where it is, and who occupies the house. A practical note: the ruler of the eighth placed in a good house tends to be read as support arriving from outside; in a difficult house, as inherited burdens.
The tradition also does not read death from house 8 alone: it uses specific techniques—the anairetas, the direction of the hyleg—that go beyond the division of houses. Reducing the topic to this house is a modern simplification.
