The Bottom of the Sky
House 4 is the sector of home, parents, and origins: the chart's private root, and also the end of things.
House 4 begins at the Bottom of the Sky (or Imum Coeli, IC): the lowest point of the chart, exactly beneath your feet, opposite the Midheaven. It is the place the Sun passes through at midnight.
It is an angular house—of the four, the most hidden. Angular means it carries weight and manifests; hidden means it does so behind closed doors. It is the force of what is private.
What house 4 describes
Three domains the tradition treats as a single one: the home (the physical house, the land, immovable property), the parents—above all the father in Hellenistic doctrine—and origins: lineage, where you come from.
And a fourth that comes as a surprise: the end of things. The ancients read in the fourth how matters conclude, including life itself and what remains afterward. Hence its association with tombs and with what is buried.
The thread running through all of it is the root: what lies underneath and supports without being seen. What was there before you and what will remain when you are gone.
The 4–10 axis
House 4 and house 10 form the vertical axis of the chart: the root and the crown. The private and the public, where you come from and where you are heading, the family and the work.
It is an axis of practical tension: energy given to one is taken from the other. A chart with a heavily loaded fourth tends toward domestic life and rootedness; with a loaded tenth, toward exposure and career.
How it is interpreted
One looks at the sign on the IC, its ruler and where that ruler is, and who occupies the house. The tradition also cross-reads house 4 with the Sun for the father in a diurnal chart and with Saturn in a nocturnal one—the signification does not rest on the house alone.

In the Hellenistic tradition house 4 is read primarily as the father, while the mother is usually read from house 10 or directly from the Moon. Much of modern astrology reversed that assignment, so it is worth stating which criterion is in use.
