House 10 is the sector of vocation, work, and public standing: the highest and most visible part of the chart.
House 10 culminates at the Midheaven (or Medium Coeli, MC): the highest point the ecliptic reaches over your meridian, the place the Sun passes through at noon.
It is the most exposed angular house. If the fourth is what lies buried, the tenth is what can be seen from far away. A planet there is a planet in plain sight of everyone.
What house 10 describes
Vocation and work: not the daily job—that is house 6—but what you are known for. The place you occupy in the social structure.
Reputation and fame: what is said about you when you are not there. The tradition also read here the favor of the powerful and dealings with authority.
And a parental figure, depending on the system: Hellenistic doctrine tends to read the mother in house 10 and the father in house 4, although much of modern astrology reversed it. It is worth stating which criterion is in use before interpreting.
How it is interpreted
The sign on the MC, its ruler and where that ruler stands, and who occupies the house. The house containing the ruler of the tenth says from where the career is built: in the third, by writing and communicating; in the seventh, in partnership with others; in the twelfth, behind the scenes.
The tradition adds two further layers: the Lot of Spirit, which speaks of one's own action and vocation, and in a diurnal chart the Sun as the natural significator of public standing.
