House 1 is the sector that begins at the Ascendant and represents the body, vitality, and self: this is where existence enters the chart.
House 1 begins at the Ascendant, the degree of the zodiac rising over the eastern horizon at the exact moment of birth. The other eleven houses are counted from there. It is literally the chart's starting point: without an Ascendant there are no houses, which is why birth time matters so much.
The Greeks called it horoskopos, “the one who observes the hour”—the source of the word horoscope, which originally meant this precise point in the sky rather than a newspaper column.
It is an angular house, the most angular of all. What falls on an angle manifests: it has the strength to take place in concrete life and to be seen from the outside.
What house 1 describes
The tradition assigns it three things that are fundamentally one: the body, vitality, and character. This is not personality in the modern psychological sense, but something more physical: constitution, temperament, and the way a person appears and moves through the world.
It also describes the length and quality of life, one of the central questions of ancient astrology. A benefic planet in the first was read as health and good bearing; an afflicted malefic as fragility or accidents.
What house 1 is not: the soul or inner world. Those belong to the Moon, while purpose belongs to the Sun. The first is the vehicle, not the driver.
The ruler of the Ascendant
The planet that rules the Ascendant's sign is called the chart ruler, and it is the most important piece of a traditional reading. If Scorpio is rising, Mars rules the chart, and whatever happens to Mars happens to you.
Its condition is examined closely: its sign and dignity, its house and the area of life receiving its energy, and the planets aspecting it. A chart ruler in house 10 draws life toward public work; in house 12, toward retreat.

Each of the seven traditional planets has a house where it feels at home: its joy (gaudium). Mercury rejoices in house 1.
The geometry is meaningful: Mercury never travels far from the Sun, and house 1 borders the horizon, where a planet becomes visible. Mercury's joy in the first speaks of the mind appearing and the body speaking.
