The Setting
House 7 is the sector of partners, associates, and declared enemies: every bond between equals that is met face to face.
House 7 begins at the Descendant: the point on the western horizon, exactly opposite the Ascendant. If house 1 is where you enter the world, the seventh is where the other person enters.
The Greeks called it dysis, the setting: the place where the stars sink below the horizon. It is an angular house, and that matters: what falls on an angle manifests, is seen, and has the strength to take place in concrete life. A planet in the seventh does not go unnoticed.
What house 7 describes
The tradition assigns it four domains that at first glance have little in common: the partner, business associates, declared enemies, and contracts and lawsuits. The thread joining them is symmetry: all are bonds between peers, face to face, where there is an explicit agreement—or an explicit dispute—and both parties stand on the same level.
That is why the enemy of house 7 is not the one who betrays you from behind: that one belongs to house 12. The seventh's enemy says it to your face and fights head-on.
It also covers the other party: in horary astrology house 7 represents the opposing side of any matter, and the astrologer as well when someone comes for a consultation.
How it is interpreted
The order is: the sign on the Descendant, the ruler of that sign and where it stands, and finally who occupies the house. The ruler leads: if the DC falls in Libra, you look at Venus—house 7 will fare as Venus fares in your chart.
The house containing that ruler says where relationships appear. Ruler of the seventh in house 6: people are met through work. In house 9: through travel or study. In house 10: through public life.
The tradition also consults natural significators: Venus for marriage in a male chart and Mars in a female one, according to ancient doctrine. That is a layer separate from the house.
The 1–7 axis
House 1 and house 7 form the horizontal axis of the chart: self and other. Whatever you do not recognize as your own tends to appear embodied across from you—that is the modern reading of the axis, and it works well without contradicting the traditional one.
It is an axis of balance: how much of life is played out in oneself and how much in the bond.
