Bad Fortune

House 6 is the sector of daily work, illness, and service: what subjects the body to a routine and wears it down.

House 6 was called kake tyche, bad fortune, and it was not a euphemism: the tradition counted it among the difficult places of the chart. It is where Mars rejoices.

It is cadent and, on top of that, it does not aspect the Ascendant: from house 6, house 1 cannot be “seen”. That geometric blindness is the technical reason for its bad reputation—what happens there affects you without your seeing it coming.

What house 6 describes

Three domains that share one logic: illness, work that subjects you, and service. The thread is the body's subjection to something larger than itself: the ailment, the repeated task, the daily obligation.

In the ancient world house 6 also included slaves and subordinates, along with small domestic animals. The modern reading translates it as employees, staff in one's charge, and pets.

It is worth distinguishing it from house 10: the tenth is vocation, what defines you professionally; the sixth is the job, the concrete routine of every day. One can have a glorious tenth house and an exhausting sixth.

Mars's joy

Mars rejoices in house 6. It is the most counterintuitive of the seven joys until the logic becomes clear: the malefics rejoice in the difficult houses, where their nature is not out of place.

Mars is cutting, effort, fever, and wound. The house of the body's wear and of hard work is exactly where it can be itself without doing extra damage. A malefic in its joy is a malefic contained.

Its opposite: house 12

House 6 and house 12 are the two houses of affliction, and they divide the labor between them: the sixth is the suffering of the body—illness, exhaustion, routine—and the twelfth that of the soul—confinement, isolation, what goes unsaid.

Frequently asked questions

Does house 6 mean I am going to fall ill?

No. It describes how the body relates to wear and what kind of routine subjects it. The tradition uses it to read constitution and vulnerabilities, not to forecast specific illnesses.

What is the difference between house 6 and house 10 regarding work?

House 10 is vocation and the place you occupy in the world: recognition. House 6 is the everyday task: the concrete effort, the schedule, the subordinates. One is the title, the other is the day.

Why does Mars rejoice in a bad house?

Because in the Hellenistic tradition the malefics rejoice in the difficult houses, where their nature is in tune with the place. Mars in house 6 finds somewhere to exercise its cutting without turning destructive: the effort and struggle of the body.
