♈︎Aries

Aries is the first sign of the zodiac, of fire and cardinal modality, ruled by Mars: the impulse that opens, charges, and does not look back.

Aries starts the zodiac at the spring equinox of the northern hemisphere, the moment the day begins to gain on the night. That place in the calendar explains almost everything else: it is the sign of pure beginning, of what has no form yet but already has a direction.

It is cardinal fire: the purest combination of initiative. The cardinal signs open each season and the fire signs radiate—together they give a push that does not deliberate. Aries does not plan the movement: it is the movement.

What Aries means in the chart

The house Aries falls in marks the area of life where you start without asking permission. There you are quick, direct, and short on patience; there you are also willing to fight.

A planet in Aries acts rawly and head-on. The Moon in Aries reacts before it feels; Mercury in Aries says what it thinks while thinking it; Venus in Aries desires urgently and without detours.

The flip side is the one you would guess: little tolerance for whatever does not pay off immediately, and a tendency to mistake speed for direction.

Mars and the exalted Sun

Mars rules Aries—its diurnal domicile. Mars is cutting, force, and war, and in Aries it plays at home: without the weight of water that Scorpio, its other domicile, adds, here it is pure direct edge.

In addition, the Sun is exalted in Aries. Exaltation is the sign where a planet is a guest of honor: not its own house, but it is received in the best room. The Sun exalted at the start of the astrological year says that identity affirms itself by beginning.

Its opposite is Libra, where Saturn is exalted and the Sun falls. The Aries–Libra axis is the one of self and other: affirmation and agreement.

The body and the season

The tradition assigns it the head: the signs run down the body from top to bottom, starting with Aries and ending at the feet with Pisces. Headaches, blows to the forehead, and quick fevers are the ailments astrological medicine attributed to it.

It is a diurnal sign (masculine, in the ancient terminology), which in the doctrine of sect aligns it with the planets of the day.

Frequently asked questions

Which planet rules Aries?

Mars, in its diurnal domicile. The Sun is also exalted in Aries, which reinforces the sign's character of initiative and self-assertion.

Is Aries a fire sign or a cardinal sign?

Both: fire is its element and cardinal its modality. Every sign crosses an element with a modality, and in Aries the element that radiates meets the modality that opens: hence its initial push.

What is the difference between having the Sun in Aries and the Ascendant in Aries?

The Sun in Aries describes identity and purpose; the Ascendant in Aries, the body and the way of entering the world. You can have one without the other, and the reading changes considerably.
